The Claw Bit is best suited for drilling in soft to medium formations and in unconsolidated formations of alternate layers of clay or shale. Whereas a drag bit would over-torque and possibly stall in these conditions, the Claw Bit excels. Claw Bits are available in sizes ranging from 3 1/2″ to 24″ in diameter.  

A claw bit might be your choice when you need something faster than a drag bit.  The blocks and cutters can be replaced without having to purchase a new body.  Often the larger size bits can be reworked by the factory to like new condition.
